Which documents do I need for my tax return?

A practical checklist to help you prepare and organise your tax documents efficiently.

Start with a clear filing system

Thorough preparation reduces follow-up questions. Create a separate folder for each tax year and organise documents by income, assets and possible deductions. Keep your previous return available to identify recurring items. Consult the current guidance issued by your canton of residence to establish which supporting documents must be submitted.

Documents to have ready

  • Income: salary certificates, pension statements and evidence of other income.
  • Assets and debts: year-end bank and investment statements, together with loan and interest records.
  • Pensions and expenses: contribution certificates and evidence of expenses claimed, such as work-related costs, childcare or donations.
  • Property and self-employment: property records or business year-end accounts, where relevant.

Check completeness before submitting

Do the names, tax year and amounts match? Have you included every account, even those rarely used? Note changes such as moving home, marriage or starting self-employment. Keep a list of outstanding questions rather than estimating uncertain figures. Having a receipt does not automatically mean an expense is fully deductible.

Your next step

Check your individual filing deadline and arrange any necessary extension with the responsible tax office in good time. Agree on a suitable channel for transferring confidential documents. HERA Accounts can help you organise the paperwork and clarify questions relating to your circumstances.

Tax treatment depends on your circumstances, tax year and canton.
